Twin Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber- BOOK REVIEW

Synopsis

A high-stakes fantasy rom-com about twin princesses separated at birth-one raised as the crown princess, and the other taken as an infant and raised to kidnap her sister, steal the crown, and avenge the parents' murders. Wren Greenrock has always known that one day she would steal her sister's place in the palace. Trained from birth to return to the place of her parents' murder and usurp the only survivor, she will do anything to rise to power and protect the community of witches she loves. Or she would, if only a certain palace guard wasn't quite so distractingly attractive, and if her reckless magic didn't have a habit of causing
trouble... Princess Rose Valhart knows that with
power comes responsibility. Marriage into a brutal
kingdom awaits, and she will not let a small matter
like waking up in the middle of the desert in the
company of an extremely impertinent (and
handsome) kidnapper get in the way of her royal
duty. But life outside the palace walls is wilder and
more beautiful than she ever imagined, and the
witches she has long feared might turn out to be the family she never knew she was missing. Two sisters separated at birth and raised into entirely different worlds are about to get to know each other's lives a whole lot better. But as coronation day looms closer and they each strive to claim their birthright, the sinister Kingsbreath, Willem Rathborne, becomes increasingly determined that neither will succeed. Who will ultimately rise to power and wear the crown?

REVIEW

This was such a fun, magical rom-com! I don’t think I’ve read any rom-com fantasy books so this is my first one and I absolutely adored it!!

(Petition to get more rom-com fantasies in future WHO’S WITH ME?!)

The story is about twin sisters who were separated at birth (one of them didn’t even knew the other existed) and are now pitted against each other for becoming the queen.

Without spoilers, I really enjoyed this plot and the dual POV of both Rose and Wren. It showed how different they were from each other and how they were raised in completely different environments with quite opposing beliefs.

I loved the authors’ writing style and how I was able to differentiate the POVs without having to check back (which sometimes happens with multiple POV books with me). Both Rose and Wren had distinct voices in my head.

Coming to their characters, I adored them both but I have to say I’m a bit partial towards Rose. I loved Wren’s quick wit but I love Rose’s heart even more.

There were also just so many tropes that I love (not just the romantic ones) that I got invested into the story pretty quickly! There was more court politics on Wren’s side but I also really enjoyed Rose discovering her place outside of the palace.

The side characters were all really fun and intriguing and I’m especially excited to see the storylines for some of them (Celeste, Alarik Felsing, Banba) in the sequel!!

As for the romance, we got not one but TWO amazing ships and my romance loving heart was soaring!

Separately, I loved both Shen Lo and Tor but I loved Wren and Tor together slightly more than Rose and Shen Lo. I just know there will be lots of angst in the next book and I just cannot wait for it!!

The comedic relief in the most serious of situations was just so amusing and unexpected, I absolutely loved it! It was not just one funny character but all the situations that made the atmosphere light. It was the kind of fantasy book that I can read without getting too serious.

Though I also felt that the fantasy aspect of the story didn’t get a lot of time develop because there was just so much going on. I’m hoping for more details and more of the story focused on the sisters’ magic in the sequel.

I would definitely recommend Twin Crowns to the people who:-

  • Enjoy lighthearted fantasy
  • Are fans of Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity and Forbidden Romance
  • Love the secret identity trope
  • Adore adventures just as much as court politics
  • Are ready for the angst that (I’m expecting) to be there in the sequel!!

A huge thank you to Harper Collins India for sending me a finished copy of this delightfully magical book!!
